On to Round Two!!

I did it!

My story was chosen by the judges to move on to round two in a microfiction writing contest hosted by #nycmidnight!

6,932 writers participated in the first round, divided into 110 groups, and with approximately 63 writers in each group.

At the very last minute, each group was given a different genre, word, and action and had exactly 24 hours to write a story of no longer than 100 words. My group got: comedy, delicate, breaking a record.

The top 15 stories in each group move on to round two and guess what? My story came in at fifth place in my group!

Round two begins at midnight EST tomorrow night. Once again, I’ll be placed in a group and given a new genre, word, and action at the very last minute. Then I’ll have 24 hours to write my story!

I’m going to be busy this weekend. Wish me luck!

Here is my winning story:

Simply winning the annual challenge isn’t my goal. Breaking Harold’s record is my objective.

Passing gas thirty-seven times in less than eight minutes?  Amazing.

We’re the only two left standing.

“Round thirty-six!” announces Lance.

Harold’s fart is delicate, almost musical.

Is that all he’s got? I wonder as I let one rip.

“Round thirty-seven!”

Harold strains for ten full seconds before an almost inaudible squeak emerges.

My contribution sounds like a rusty zipper.

“Round thirty-eight!”

Harold grunts defeat as a brown stain tarnishes the seat of his pants.

I take a bow, my trumpet-like flatulence announcing my victory.
